Male beauty contest in the late 70s pulled one of biggest crowds ever
The picturesque Araluen Valley is situated 24 kms from Braidwood. The Valley is steeped in history known not only for its bushrangers and gold rush years but for its stone fruits, vegetables, sheep and beef and a family- friendly hotel.
It has been more than two decades since the Araluen community hosted the locally legendary Araluen Sports Day (see quaint and interesting vintage images!).
For many of its early years the Araluen Sports Day predominately held equestrian events including the Araluen Valley Hotel Cup with games that included the Jack and Jill Cross Cut Saw Championship, tug-of-war and the pub crawl. The local dance held in the hall concluded a colourful weekend.
These sports days hold so many memories for many in Araluen and surrounding districts, they still talk about it today, with the odd poem or two written about the day. One year in the late 70s Araluen hosted a Male Beauty Contest. That year, with lots of male contestants, was one of the biggest crowds ever seen at the Sports day.
This year it will be at the Recreation Ground, Saturday 1 October. The program includes food, music and fresh food stall. The NSW Axemans competition will be a main draw card and exhibits from old tractors through to vintage cars and whip cracking will fill the day.
Games for all to enter include the battle of a tug-of war, teams of 7, with a winner’s trophy, the nail drive, an amateur crosscut saw and pie eating competition. If you have a dog that can jump, there is the dog jumping competition with great prizes up for grabs. A family day with many games and activities for children including a treasure hunt. This year will also see the Inaugural Araluen ute show and shine.
Araluen Sports Day Saturday 1 OCT. A day of fun and competition returns.
Entry to the Sports day is $12 Family.
