Labor promises to fully-fund ‘Gonski’ education improvements, cut by the Coalition

Mike Kelly

Federal Labor has announced that if elected later this year it would fully fund the Gonski education program of needs based-funding over the coming decade. Your Child. Our Future will see an additional investment of $4.5 billion for years five and six of the Gonski reforms and provision of $37.3 billion over the decade.

Labor candidate for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly, said “This Labor plan is vital for schools in rural and regional areas like ours as it provides disabled, indigenous and regional loadings. This is crucial, as the ground we have lost in education has been most pronounced in regional Australia.”

As well as better teacher training, the education package promises:

  • Tailored attention and more one-on-one time with students including literacy and numeracy programs and support;
  • More subject choices, extension classes and extra-curricular activities, so that every child is engaged at school; and
  • Funding based on individual needs, which will give greater power and flexibility to schools to tailor programs to meet the needs of their students.

Dr Kelly claims that the Coalition since coming to power in NSW and federally, have cut funding of more than $160 million slated for classrooms in Eden-Monaro over the next ten years, to the detriment of children and parents going forward.
