Renewable energy key to local economy, lower power prices

Mike-Kelly-EdenMonaro-solar

I AM PASSIONATE about limiting the impacts of climate change and the need for governments, across the spectrum, to act decisively on renewable energy.

Eden-Monaro is the ‘canary in the coal mine’ when it comes to climate change. Our billion-dollar ski industry, our farmers and our tourism industry all depend on consistent and reliable weather to survive and prosper.

Furthermore, renewable energy is becoming increasingly important to our local economy with our new wind farms, solar farms and the forthcoming expansion of the Snowy Hydro.

But sadly Australia has seen a complete absence of action to combat climate change and back renewables over the past six years of Coalition government.

This deeply divided and chaotic government has been so ideologically opposed to the reality of climate change, that they have failed to adopt renewables even when presented with evidence that they will bring power prices down.

Under Coalition electricity prices increased nearly 19 percent in past three years
— three times faster than wages growth.

Thanks to the Liberals and Nationals, Australia is in an energy crisis. Electricity prices have increased by nearly 19 percent over the past three years — three times faster than wages growth.

The Liberals and Nationals haven’t been able to agree on a policy amongst themselves, and aren’t up to leading the country in the right direction.

Labor’s plan

By contrast, Labor has a genuine plan to tackle climate change, future proof our energy sector, and reduce power prices.
