‘They don’t drop dead’: Thirsty koalas flock to Blinky drinkers

WHEN A BRUTAL four-day heat wave killed 25 percent of the koala population near Gunnedah, NSW, in 2009, nobody knew why. Koalas were believed not to drink, a myth now disproved.

“We were finding dead koalas under trees,” said retired Gunnedah cattle farmer Rob Frend.

A three-year research program by the University of Sydney on Mr Frend’s property to see if koalas will drink from water containers has found they do like a drink.
